Secondary Car

It was never meant to be a “main” car. The Metropolitan was marketed as a second car for American families—perfect for errands, city driving, or as a stylish commuter when full-size cars felt too much

Mets for Sale

Celebrities loved them. Metropolitans were popular with actors and entertainers in the 1950s and ’60s, helping cement their image as a stylish, unconventional choice. It outlived its critics.

No Trunk Lids

No trunk lid -on purpose. Early models required folding down the rear seat to access luggage space. The exterior trunk lid didn’t arrive until later, proving practicality evolved along with feedback.

Classic Two- Toned Style

Those iconic color combinations weren’t just decorative—they were a major selling point, emphasizing the Metropolitan’s fun, fashionable personality in contrast to conservative cars of the era.

Where it all Began

It predated the compact-car boom by years. The Metropolitan arrived well before American automakers fully embraced small cars, making it one of the earliest mainstream subcompacts sold in the U.S.

The Engine

It had British roots under the hood. The 1.2L engine was later upgraded to a 1.5L, giving the lightweight car a bit more pep while keeping its reputation for efficiency and easy maintenance.
